How Can Physical Therapy (PT) Help With Lumbar Pain and Vasovagal Response During Pregnancy:

Pain in the lumbar and thoracic spine is very common during pregnancy, but vasovagal has been found to be in the later stages of pregnancy.

During pregnancy, rib articulations become more mobile, stretching of the abdominal insertion on the ribcage can result in pain at the thoracic region. This ribcage pain can be the result of joint dysfunction, inflammation or muscle balance in the spine and ribcage. The effect of thoracic and low back pain on a pregnant woman can have many effects on physical and on mental well-being. Also, the Respiratory function may change during pregnancy as the uterus grows which can lead to difficult labored respiration or Dyspnea.

 Physiological changes during pregnancy can have an effect on mood and may be a source of tension and anxiety. PT can help with back pain during pregnancy by therapeutic exercise which has been used to improve posture and increase the mobility of the lumbar and thoracic spine on the ribcage. PT will help to prevent recurrence of pain.

Also, Treatment for back pain during pregnancy is to decrease pain and maximize function. A study was found that the use of spinal manipulation therapy can be effective for treatment of the thoracic spine pain. In PT pelvic and ribcage symmetry can be achieved, normal respiratory patterns can be restored and thoracic and lumbar pain can be decreased.
